Women, Art, and the Dead Sea: Exploring the Work of Sigalit Landau

On October 23, the PKI Women’s Group of Dimona hosted an inspiring meeting with artist and art historian Anna Smolyarova, dedicated to women artists and the work of the acclaimed Israeli performance artist Sigalit Landau.

In her talk, “The Dead Sea as an Artist’s Studio,” Anna shared insights into Landau’s family background and how her personal roots shape her art. Through photos and videos, participants explored Landau’s distinctive creative process — from immersing objects in the Dead Sea to her powerful performances addressing the boundaries of the body, fragility, and transformation.

The discussion also touched on the Dead Sea’s place in Jewish history, recalling the story of Lot’s wife, and how Landau’s art draws attention to the region’s environmental challenges. Participants described the meeting as eye-opening — a deep dive into Israeli culture and a reminder of how art can connect history, nature, and identity.
