Helping Parents Navigate Difficult Conversations with Teens
Last week, PKI’s Bat Yam women’s group hosted an engaging discussion with author Evgenia Pasternak, who has spent more than two decades writing for teenagers about complex topics. Together, participants explored one of the most challenging aspects of parenting: how to talk with teens about issues such as relationships, mental health, substance use, war, loss, and other difficult realities shaping their lives.
A central theme of the conversation was the power of books as a tool for dialogue. By engaging with characters and stories, young people can explore sensitive subjects from a safe distance, making it easier to reflect, ask questions, and begin meaningful conversations with trusted adults.
Participants also discussed practical strategies for communicating with teenagers, including listening without judgment, avoiding lectures, being honest when answers are unclear, and recognizing when a difficult conversation needs a pause. The gathering provided parents and grandparents with valuable tools for strengthening relationships and building trust with the next generation.
