Ukrainian Dramaturgy Resonates Across the World

With support from a Women’s Opportunity Fund of Ukraine travel grant, playwright and director Inna Honcharova represented Ukraine at the APOLLO International Youth Theatre Festival in Alba Iulia, Romania.

Inna presented her original play “The Trumpeter,” inspired by real events from the 2022 defense of Mariupol — a work that explores human resilience, compassion, and the role of art in surviving trauma. At the festival, she led a public reading, joined professional discussions, and connected with artists from across Europe.

“Participating in an international festival makes it possible to amplify the female voice in contemporary Ukrainian theatre and strengthen the role of women in artistic and social discourse,” Inna shared. “‘The Trumpeter,’ though rooted in wartime experience, carries a deeply humanistic message in which women — as mothers, partners, volunteers — help preserve humanity, memory, and inner resilience.”
